gluten-free cookie dough ice cream

When I lived in Manhattan, I didn't spend many evenings at home. Evenings in little clubs on the Lower East Side, good sushi, and movies with friends at the Lincoln Plaza cineplex meant I came home in time to eat something and fall into bed most nights. New York is not where you live if you're a homebody.

But when Sharon moved into my apartment, we found ourselves, at least once a week, exhausted from all our adventures. That's when we'd take the elevator down to the lobby, walk across the street, and saunter into our corner bodega.

"I'm getting Cherry Garcia. What are you getting?"

I never knew. Sometimes I'd buy that too. Or Chunky Monkey. Often, it was cookie dough, though.

We'd hold the cold pints in our hands and walk into the warm night air. Up the elevator, and into her room, where we'd sit on her queen-sized bed and watch whatever bad tv presented itself on cable that night. We needed the down time.

There's something funny about my friend Sharon. She's fit and thin, in better shape than most people I know. But she has never, to my knowledge, eaten a pint of ice cream in more than one sitting. When we sat on that bed, watching movies, she always dove and scraped, swirling the spoon and lifting it to her mouth with passionate alacrity. Me? I took small bites, and tried to control myself.

She always enjoyed hers more.

But somehow, the guilt of eating an entire pint of ice cream in one sitting always stopped me from making all that goodness disappear immediately.

Until I found Purely Decadent Cookie Dough, that is.

The good folks at Turtle Mountain sent me some of their dairy-free treats to try. I have to admit -- dairy-free ice cream didn't appeal to me much. I don't have to avoid dairy. Why try the imitation stuff?

But there was gluten-free cookie dough involved. And that I don't see very often.

So I tried a spoonful. And then another. The icy part felt rich in the mouth. And the cookies? Oh, I hadn't eaten cookies in ice cream since one of those pints at the bodega.

I'm going to admit this — I ate the entire pint in one sitting.

And every time I've bought this non-dairy treat, I have done it again. That's why I don't buy it that often. Because it's clear I'm going to be imitating Sharon and sitting on the bed with my spoon, diving and scraping, and making it all disappear.

How often does gluten-free and dairy free taste like this?

Their coconut gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free cookie dough "ice cream" is EVEN better. I highly recommend it, much more than their gf soy version. Soooooo decadent and rich and smooth (and, in my opinion, healthier than the soy stuff).

Their new coconut cultured yogurts rock too...I especially like the vanilla and blueberry flavors! My only complaint is that the packaging looks so similar to the soy version that I try to avoid! :)

Sounds great! Have the flavors yuo've tried contain soy? I'm sensitive to soy so I am trying to limit my intake.


p.s. Lately, I've been enjoying the Coconut Bliss frozen dessert; they're really tasty too and soy and gluten-free

Just like when you recreate something into a gluten-free form, and it tastes amazing, so too are all the dairy-free recreations. Just like anything, you have to try alot of brands and hunt around in every health food store for variety. Mmmmm ice cream is one thing I couldn't live without, my partner and I go through a pint a week. Why don't they sell dairy free ice cream in bigger containers?

Shauna, I took my 12 year old to the Puyallup Fair last Saturday, and she *so* desperately wanted ice cream. My dear daughter is so at peace with her gluten intolerance, but living without dairy is hard for her - - I reminded her that last time she ate ice cream, she coughed like a TB patient for over a week. She thought quietly while standing in front of the Baskin Robbins booth under the hot & noisy midway sun, pondering the choice that we have agreed is hers to make. Then I found brilliance: we could pick up the Turtle Mountain Peanut Butter Zig Zag at Whole Foods on the way home, I whispered. She looked at me with love, fully acknowledging my brilliance. These are my favorite mother moments: her choice, my gentle guidance. Thank you for all your inspiration.

Every flavor of the gluten free cookie doughs have disappeared before I even got home on the subway. I always finish off the pint. :)

I tried this brand at the GIG conference summer before last and was impressed. And, they've had even more highly recommended flavors come out since then. I was fortunate then that the samples were small containers. ;) None of the stores near me carry it, but I'd buy some if I could.

Speaking as a dairy free person, I have to say I concur! I looove this stuff! (The mint chocolate chip pints? So good, so bad far me, so easy to eat in one sitting!)

I just tried Snickerdoodle gluten free from this same brand. It was equally amazing, a lovely sugary crunchiness mixed in with sweet creaminess.

You guys need to try the ice cream by "Coconut Bliss. Its made with coconut and agave. This is the best I have tasted.

I LOVE THIS BRAND, i went through a "vegan phase" and made my mom buy some and everyone in my house was hooked. i mean its just plain good.

I'm not a huge fan of most non-dairy ice creams, but if it's made with coconut, it is likely to be fantastic. You want to pick a flavor that matches the strong coconut flavor (chocolate hazelnut? mint chip? Yum!)Of course, you don't really want to look at the saturated fat content.
